II.          COURSE OBJECTIVES

The purpose of HEB 5120/2620 is to expand the knowledge of the elements of biblical Hebrew necessary for exegesis and exposition of the Hebrew Bible.  The following specific course objectives obtain:

A.         This course will enable the student to read and translate simple sentences from the Hebrew Bible.

B.         The student will be able to recognize the rules of Hebrew phonology and mechanics: vowels, consonants, syllables, and punctuation.

C.         The student will be able to correctly recognize the use of Hebrew morphology: nouns, pronouns, verbs, reference modifiers, and function words.

D.         The student will be able to apply elementary Hebrew syntax in understanding and translation: coordination, subordination, and word order.

E.         Students who complete the first semester will be able to conjugate a regular verb through all seven stems of the verbal system.

F.          Students who complete this course will be able to effectively use the lexical aids available for accurate exegesis of the Hebrew Bible.

III.         COURSE REQUIREMENTS

A.         Students will be responsible for all daily assignments as listed in the schedule which follows in this syllabus.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with these assignments and to make up those which may be missed for ANY reason.

B.         Class attendance in the study of a foreign language is very important.  Regardless of a student’s average, attendance will be considered as a factor in the computation of the final average.  Students who have three absences will receive a reduction of the final grade by at least one letter regardless of the reason for the absences.

C.         Major exams will be administered at appropriate intervals through the semester.  The student should take note of these exam dates as listed in the schedule which follows in this syllabus.

D.         In addition to the major exams, weekly quizzim will also be administered.  NO MAKE UPS will be given on these quizzim.
