HEB5110E

Fall

Thursday 6:30-9:30 pm

I.          Course Description

An introduction to the fundamentals of classical Hebrew with primary emphasis on the strong verb and basic vocabulary.

II.        Course Objectives

The purpose of Heb5110 is to achieve a knowledge of the elements of biblical Hebrew necessary for exegesis and exposition of the Hebrew Bible.  The following specific course objectives obtain:

A.        This course will enable the student to read and translate simple sentences from the Hebrew Bible. The Student will also gain a knowledge of the place that Hebrew has in the world languages and how its grammar has been studied and handled over the millennia.

B.                 The student will be able to use the rules of Hebrew phonology and mechanics: vowels, consonants, syllables, and punctuation.

C.                 The student will be able to correctly use Hebrew morphology: nouns, pronouns, verbs, reference, modifiers, function words.

D.        The student will be able to apply elementary Hebrew syntax in understanding and translation: coordination, subordination, and word order.

E.                 Students who complete the first semester will be able to conjugate a regular verb through all seven stems of the verbal system.

F.                  Students who complete this course will be able to effectively use the lexical aids available for accurate exegesis of the Hebrew Bible and evaluation of translations.

III.       COURSE REQUIREMENTS

A.                Students will be responsible for all daily assignments as listed in the schedule which follows in this syllabus.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with these assignments and to make up those which may be missed for ANY reason.

B.                 Class attendance in the study of a foreign language is very important.  Regardless of a student’s average, attendance will be considered as a factor in the computation of the final grade.  Students who have excessive absences will receive a reduction of the final grade by at least one letter regardless of the reason for the absences.

C.                 Tests will be administered at appropriate intervals through the semester.  The student should take note of these test dates as listed in the schedule which follows in this syllabus.

D.                In addition to the major exams, weekly quizzim will also be administered.  One quiz of 5 to 10 minutes duration will be administered each class week except the day of the scheduling of a test.  There will be approximately 15 (maybe more) of these exams during the semester.  NO MAKE UPs will be given on these quizzes.

Vocabulary Note: For this class there are actually three different vocabulary lists, each of which must be kept up with and will be eligible for quizzim and testim, both of which are CUMMULATIVE.

            1. Vocabulary from Fuller exercises. This list is used as you do the exercises and is found in the textbook.

            2. Madden Vocabulary. This is the vocabulary list that will be used to bolster your own Hebrew vocabulary.

            3. Genesis Vocabulary. This is built as we work our way through Genesis chapter 1.

Notes to the Wise:

Vocabulary is a major part of learning a foreign language. As such, vocabulary quizzes and tests will be comprehensive.

Practice writing everything, everyday. Many times, every day. Over and over. Practice makes closer to perfect than not practicing does. Brain and Muscle memory is real handy in this class.
