I.             Course Description

An introduction to the fundamentals of classical Hebrew with primary emphasis on the strong verb and basic vocabulary.

II.            Course Objectives

The purpose of HEB 2610 is to achieve a knowledge of the elements of biblical Hebrew necessary for exegesis and exposition of the Hebrew Bible.  The following specific course objectives obtain:

At the end of this semester the student will

1.       Have been taught a working knowledge of Hebrew vocabulary.

2.       Have been taught Biblical Hebrew morphology, phonology, grammar, syntax and the Massoretic accent system.

3.       Have been taught the Hebrew verb system, particularly the regular verb and its stems.

4.       Have been taught to apply elementary Hebrew syntax in understanding and translation, particularly aspects of heirarchy, coordination, subordination, and word order.

5.       Have been taught to use the classical lexicon and grammar for independent study and research and to employ those tools for an accurate exegesis of the Hebrew Bible.

6.       Have parsed all of the words from Genesis 1 and produced a Genesis Chapter 1 parsing chart/translation notebook.

III.          COURSE REQUIREMENTS

1.       Students will be responsible for all daily assignments as listed in the schedule which follows in this syllabus.  It is the student’s responsibility to keep up with these assignments and to make up those which may be missed for ANY reason.

2.       Class attendance in the study of a foreign language is very important.  Regardless of a student’s average, attendance will be considered as a factor in the computation of the final average.  Students who have excessive absences will receive a reduction of the final grade by at least one letter regardless of the reason for the absences.

3.       Major exams will be administered at appropriate intervals through the semester.  The student should take note of these exam dates as listed in the schedule which follows in this syllabus. The exams are cumulative.

4.       In addition to the major exams, daily quizzim will also be administered.  One quiz of 5 to 10 minutes duration will be administered each class week except the day of the scheduling of a major exam.  There will be approximately 15 (maybe more) of these quizzim during the semester.  NO MAKE UPs will be given on these quizzim.

Required:

Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia with Greek New Testament. American Bible Society, 1996. ISBN 3-43805-250-4.

NOTE: The preferred version of this is the one listed above-it contains the entire Word of God, not part of it-one ought not walk around with less than the whole counsel of Holy Writ. It used to sell for about $135.00 but it can be found HERE for much less. If strapped for cash, you can find a BHS in paperback at our bookstore.

Weingreen, J. A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew. 2d ed. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1959.  ISBN 19-815422-4.

Brown, F., S. R. Driver, and Charles A. Briggs, eds. A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament. Oxford: Clarendon Press. There is also a version at our bookstore from Hendrickson publishers. Same book, different publisher, several bucks less.

Gesenius, William, E. Kautsch and A. E. Cowley, eds. Gesenius’ Hebrew Grammar. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1983. ISBN 0-19-815406-2. There is a paperback version of this also.

Notes to the Wise:

Vocabulary is a major part of learning a foreign language. As such, vocabulary quizzes and tests will be comprehensive.

Practice writing everything, everyday. Many times, every day. Over and over. Practice makes closer to perfect than not practicing does. Brain Muscle memory is real handy in this class.
