Zotero: Citation Made Easy: SBL Supplement

An overview of Zotero citation management software.

Journal Article Abbreviations

The SEBTS SBL Supplement says that journal titles in footnotes should be abbreviated, but in the bibliography the full title should appear (see 1.3–1.5). E.g.

  • Footnote:
    •  Sebastian P. Brock, “St Ephrem the Syrian on Reading Scripture,” DRev 125.438 (2007): 37–50.
  • Bibliography:
    • Brock, Sebastian P. “St Ephrem the Syrian on Reading Scripture.” Downside Review 125.438 (2007): 37–50.

However, SBL Format 2nd edition allows for abbreviations in both places. This causes a problem for Zotero users. Below is the file for the fix and the video explains how to install it on Zotero.

The SEBTS SBL Supplement says that series titles should be abbreviated in the footnotes, but in the bibliography the full title of the series should be listed. E.g.

  • Footnote: Sebastian P. Brock, The Luminous Eye: The Spiritual World Vision of Saint Ephrem the SyrianCSS 124 (Kalamazoo, MI: Cistercian Publications, 1985).
  • Bibliography:  Brock, Sebastian P. The Luminous Eye: The Spiritual World Vision of Saint Ephrem the SyrianCistercian Studies Series 124. Kalamazoo, MI: Cistercian Publications, 1985.

In order accomplish this do the following.

  • Download the SEBTS SBL Supplement Fix Below
  • Place the series abbreviation in the "Abstract" field on all Books in a series in Zotero.
  • Be sure to delete all abstracts from Book titles in Zotero.
    • You can turn these into a note. (see video)

For Bible dictionary entires you will need to follow the same procedure as with Series mentioned above. The style below has dictionary entries that will allow abbreviations to be added to the "Abstract" field. If nothing is present then it will pull from the "dictionary title" field.

Watch video below on how to use this style.
