Biographical Note: LaVerne L. Butler (1926-2010) was born in Henderson County in Western Kentucky. He attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky and served as a pastor for over 50 years in Kentucky, Indiana, Florida, and Illinois. While the pastor of Ninth and O Baptist Church in Louisville, Butler openly challenged the liberal theology being taught at Southern Seminary and became a leading figure in the conservative resurgence of the Southern Baptist Convention. His sermon, “Will the Real Southern Baptist Please Stand Up,” became a rallying cry for the belief in biblical inerrancy.
Scope and Contents: The material in this collection includes correspondence related to Southern Seminary professor Dale Moody’s interruption of an evening service at Ninth and O Baptist church which became known as “The Moody Incident.” There is also material related to the foundation of the Baptist Faith and Mission Fellowship which was an influential group of conservatives during the Conservative Resurgence.
