Biographical Note: Charles Jerry Vines was born in Carrollton, Georgia, 1937. He was educated at Mercer University (B.A), New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (B.D.), and Luther Rice University (TH.D). After he attended school, Dr. Vines pastored Dauphin Way Baptist Church in Mobile, Alabama. During his pastorate in Alabama, he was elected President of the Alabama Pastors’ conference (1976-1977). He relocated to Jacksonville in 1982 to pastor First Baptist Church, before being elected as President of the Southern Baptist Convention for two terms (1988-1989). In light of his Presidency of the Southern Baptist Convention Dr. Vines was a key figure in the Conservative Resurgence. He has published over twenty books including, Power In The Pulpit, Passion In The Pulpit, and The Spirit Book. Dr. Vines served at First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, until he retired in 2006. He and his wife Janet have four children.
Scope and Contents: This collection contains material related to the Southern Baptist Convention Presidency of Dr. Jerry Vines. The collection spans the years Dr. Vines served his two terms as President. During his presidency he also served as Pastor of First Baptist Church, Jacksonville. This collection includes financial records, annual meeting agendas, and order of business records. It also includes correspondence with Southern Baptist Pastors, correspondence with the Southern Baptist Convention Vice Presidents, correspondence with Southern Baptist Convention Committee members, and Committee on Committee nominations. The collection was donated in arrangement by similar or relevant material.
