Abstract: This collection contains a scrapbook detailing the life and ministry of Alice M. Straughan who was devoted to the promotion and growth of church librarianship.

Biographical Note: Alice Miriam Straughn (1900-1985) was a bookstore owner and church librarian who was devoted to the cause of developing church libraries and educating church members. She worked as the church librarian at First Baptist Church Greensboro, NC from 1947-1972, and grew the library’s collection to over 7,000 volumes during that time. She also established endowments at Southern Baptist theological Seminary and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary for the purpose of promoting church librarianship.

Scope and Contents: The scrapbook in this collection covers Alice M. Straughan’s life, from her time as a bookstore owner to her time as a church librarian, to her establishment of endowments at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.
