Abstract: This collection contains one box of paper material related to Levy L. Carpenter who served as the editor of the North Carolina Baptist newspaper, The Biblical Recorder from 1942-1959. This collection includes correspondence and other material related to Dr. Levy’s life and work before his time as editor at The Biblical Recorder.
Biographical Note: Levy Leonidas Carpenter (1891-1966) was born in Wake County, North Carolina. He attended Wake Forest College, earning his BA in 1913, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, earning his ThM and ThD in 1918, and Yale University, earning his PhD in 1927. He served as an Army Chaplain and as a pastor in Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina. He also served as a professor at The University of South Carolina, Furman University, Limestone College, and Baylor University. In 1942, he left Baylor to become the editor of The Biblical Recorder, the state newspaper for North Carolina Baptists. Over the course of his 17 years in that role, he continued to write, travel, and serve in various capacities, including on the Board of Trustees for Southern Baptist Seminary beginning in 1957.

Scope and Contents: The material in this collection includes the personal and professional correspondence of Levy L. Carpenter and includes information about his time as chaplain at the University of South Carolina, his transition to Furman University, and his work at Baylor University. The material in this collection also contains pamphlets and receipts related to Carpenter’s work and other volunteer roles.

Arrangement: The material in this collection is divided into two series. The first series contains correspondence from 1921-1942. The second series contains vocational material, including pamphlets and receipts dated between 1926 and 1939.
