Biographical Note: Thomas "Tom" Stephens Haggai (1931-2020) was a Baptist minister, public speaker, writer, and businessman. He began his ministry at age 12, preaching his first sermon in Boston, Massachusetts after learning he would survive a life-threatening illness. Thomas Haggai graduated from Furman University in 1951 with a bachelor's degree. In 2011 he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and in 2013 an honorary Doctor of Divinity from the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky. He was the senior pastor at Emerywood Baptist Church in High Point, North Carolina from 1956 to 1963. While in ministry, he was a highly requested motivational speaker. Because of his demanding speaking schedule, Thomas Haggai decided to step down from his position in ministry and enter the business world, being appointed to the board of directors of Independent Grocers Alliance, Inc. (IGA) in 1972. He later was appointed to be Chairman and CEO. In 2016, Thomas Haggai retired from the business, receiving the title of chairman emeritus, which he held until his death in March 2020.
