Creator(s): Tolbert, Malcolm O., 1924-2014
Date(s): 1950-1967
Extent: 0.2 cu.ft.
Biographical Note: Malcolm O. Tolbert had a long and varied career within Baptist religious circles, beginning as a pastor at the age of 18. Tolbert was also a missionary in Brazil, a seminary professor, and author of many books on the interpretation of scripture for modern life. Born in 1924, he was a native of Baton Rouge and a graduate of Istrouma High School before enrolling at Louisiana College in Pineville, LA to begin a career in the ministry. The advent of the war caused him to forego his ministerial deferment and enlist in the Army Air Corps, where he was trained as a bombardier before being honorably discharged. He returned to his studies at Louisiana College, and after graduation continued his ministerial training at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1952 he responded to a call to missionary service in Brazil and moved to Campinas, then Jundiai, then Belem, Brazil. He was widely praised for his singular command of the Portuguese language and the broad appeal of his sermons delivered in idiomatic style. He left the mission field in 1960 to continue his graduate studies at NOBTS, where he received his Th.D. in 1964. He became a faculty member at NOBTS in 1961, teaching basic courses in Greek, New Testament, and Theology. In 1977 he responded to a call to the pastorate at the First Baptist Church of Gainesville, GA, where he served as senior pastor until 1979, when he returned to teaching budding ministerial students at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. He retired from SEBTS in 1989 and continued an active life of preaching and writing until near the end of his life. Obituary of Malcolm O. Tolbert, "The Advocate," December 1, 2014, national edition
